Breathing Space in Music

While most students want to know when to play certain notes and chords, it’s equally important to know when not to play. For example, I had a student who knew how to improvise and play in the New Age style. What he didn’t know how to do was to allow for breathing space. I tried to teach him that you don’t have to play note upon note but allow for some pauses.

Eventually he got it. He learned how not to rush and that the pauses between notes are as important as the notes themselves - especially in the New Age style of piano playing. Listen to pioneer New Age piano player Steven Halpern to get an excellent idea of this.

Steven literally defined “breathing space” for music. His music floats in the air. It is pure improvisation and, if you listen to him play, you’ll find that’ it’s one of the easiest styles to play in.

Many people get discouraged when hearing about how violin virtuosos tell their stories: how they started as early as five years old child prodigies, how they were supported and even forced by their parents into playing, and even how they were disciplined and treated into strict training by their teachers. But, as intimidating as most violinists experiences may sound, no hard stories can really stop one from achieving a life-long dream of learning the violin or from heeding to music s call especially when this call come late in life. Adult late.

Alex Bugnon “Free” Smooth Jazz Music CD Review

Free is the latest release from Smooth Jazz Star Alex Bugnon, and I can only think of one word to describe this CD AWESOME!

Unfortunately, it s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Free. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Free has a nicely varied, mix of 10 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly gifted artist.
